Working from home – where to start

Web Business

If you are reading this then you are most likely in the same situation I was a few years ago. fed up with the mediocrity of the business you are in, tired of being told what to do and when to do it and thinking there MUST be another way!

As a result you turn to the internet, after all people can and do make very good money working from home!

why not you?

However as you do more research you realise there are literally thousands of ways to make money working from home and more specifically by using the internet…

So which way is right for you and how do you choose THE ONE?

Well being the helpful guy I am, I have listed my top five tips to help you on your way…

working from home

1. Don’t Quit Your Day Job

First and foremost, Don’t Quit your job just yet!

You are going to need to go to work for a little longer. With a web based business, just like in the real world it can take time to build up your income.

It is unlikely that you will start making enough money to live on right away so you will need your job in order to get by until your internet business takes off.

2. Set Goals!

I know I go on about this A LOT but it is important.

Setting goals helps you to focus, provides you with structure, gives you direction and most importantly helps to motivate you when things are not going to plan.

When setting goals be as detailed as possible… how much does your business need to make to break even? How much do you need to consistently make a day/week/month in order to quit your job?

3. What Do You Bring To The Table?

Before you start scouring the internet to find the perfect opportunity, stop and take assessment of yourself.

Don’t overlook the fact that you may have the skills or knowledge that other people may want to know and learn.

For instance if you work in the health industry you could create products such as a monthly newsletter or membership site to help people lose weight/gain muscle/get fit etc.

If you have a passion for baking and decorating cakes you could offer web based tutorials to paying customers.

We all have skills, hobbies and passions. Evaluate your own, you may find you can turn them into a profitable web based business without the need to learn a whole new skill set.

4. Have A Look At Which Business Models Are Most Successful

When it comes to Internet based business you will find there are only a few business models that are successful…

Membership Sites. – This is a great business model because once established you have a recurring income. You charge customers X amount of money a month for access to the content contained within your website.

Training Products. – Another great way to sell your knowledge, this could be in the form of eBooks, podcasts, training videos etc. You don’t even need your own website. You can sell through third party sites or use affiliates.

eBay/Amazon/Etsy. – A tried and tested method but one that is as good today as it has always been. If you have nothing to sell you can work as a eBay Trading Assistant making a commission on other sellers stock. Of course if you have your own products to sell even better.

5. Avoid At All Costs

There are certain Internet based businesses that will only work for the big boys, these should be avoided at all costs.

Selling Physical items with small profit margins. – this is a no no, lots of work for very little returns – a recipe for disaster.

Buying Wholesale and selling retail. – Avoid this at all costs, your are putting yourself in competition with the big boys and unless your budget is unlimited or you are aiming at a very specific but lucrative niche then you are unlikely to make a success of it.

Working from home – Conclusion

If you really are considering working from home, take your time deciding what type of business you want to run. Do your research and put the hard work in, to get things right BEFORE you launch.

The best products to sell are information based products. You develop these yourself (or use a resource like fiver to pay someone to produce the product for you). When done this way the outlay is small and if you create the right product for the right market at the right price the rewards can be great.

Working this way your only cost is the development of just one product which you can sell many times over. The other great thing is it can all be delivered instantly over the internet.
