Positive Self Talk Is Essential To Success

positive self

A lot of people I speak to really want to break away from the normal 9 to 5. Sadly they are often held back due to a lack of positive self talk. By this I don’t just mean seeing the best in everything. I’m also talking about the way we speak to ourselves, the things we say and how we say them.

To be fair most people do take those first tentative steps towards making this life changing move…

They may have thought of a great way to make money. They might have brought a book on how to start their own business. They could have attend a seminar by someone who has done just what they would like to do. They may have even paid for a course that takes them step by step through the process of setting up a great money making system.

When I decided, I wanted to break away from the rat race I did all of the above and much more. Spending thousands in the process.

BUT like most people, I never really got beyond those first few steps. In fact it was over TEN YEARS before I actually did grab the bull by the horns and take action.

negative self talk

Why do we do this?

Why don’t we take action if we want something so bad that it occupies our every waking moment and its never far from the forefront of our mind?

Why do we sit and procrastinate, mulling it over in our heads day after day, week after week instead of doing something about it?

The reason is this…

We have been told so often throughout our lives that this kind of thing can’t be done. As a result we usually come up with a number of excuses in order to justify our inactivity.

We bombard ourselves with negative self -talk such as:

I’m not intelligent enough.

I didn’t have a good education/get good grades/go to college. etc.

I haven’t got the time.

I can’t afford to do it.

I am too old/young.

I’ve never done anything like this before.

Or we promise ourselves we will start but put things off . . .

I will start Friday/next weekend/next month/when I have that week off work. etc.

I also know from experience one of the main reasons for not taking action is fear!

Fear of failure!

Fear of change!

Fear of the unknown!

Fear of what other people will think of us!

The list goes on but generally comes back to that one irrational emotion;

FEAR! – False Evidence Appearing Real!

The good news for us all  is we CAN do something about it. The bad news is, its going to take a little bit of effort to address the problem…

EFFORT! NOOOOO!

Don’t worry its nothing complicated and it really is something that everyone and anyone can do.

What we have to do is change our mindset, change the way we think about ourselves and gain a little more self belief.

To achieve this the first thing we need to do is change the way we speak to ourselves, we need to ensure when we do speak to ourselves we are using positive self talk.

This is what I’m going to be concentrating on today – positive thinking with regards to how we see ourselves and more importantly how we talk to ourselves.

From very early on in life each and everyone of us talks to ourselves, sometimes out loud but mostly in our heads. What we say and how we say it has a huge influence on how we react to the situations we find ourselves in on a daily basis.

Over time we (or the people around us/society in general) brainwash ourselves with all kinds of limiting thoughts and notions of what we can do. We are influenced by this negativity and it controls what we do, how we react and what we can achieve etc.etc.

We tend to listen to all the negative things people tell us about ourselves and forget the positive. Peoples opinions seem to matter to us more than our opinions of ourselves.

Before we know it all this negative self talk and outside influence helps to program our subconscious mind into accepting that we should be happy with what we do and what we have.

Even convincing us that what we dream of having in our lives is really beyond our own capabilities.

After all you have a job/food on the table/ a roof over your head/ a car etc. so you should be satisfied with your lot right?

But Is This Really Your Definition Of Happiness?

Are YOU really satisfied with your lot?

I’m guessing that as you are reading this the answer is a very loud and resounding NO!

Well then it’s time to admit to yourself that you are unhappy with where you are at this moment in your life and that you are no longer going to accept your life as it is…

It’s time to make your life what it can be and more to the point what it should be.

It’s time to realise that what we think of ourselves is more important to our future than what other people think of us.

According to psychologists how we view life and more importantly how we view ourselves is largely set in stone by the time we are six years old.

its you

What? Six Years Old!

Just think about that for a while…

Everything we do in life, every decision we make, how we talk to ourselves and what we expect to achieve for ourselves is largely influenced by what kind of life we have lived and what kind of experiences we have had in those first few years!

Kind of scary eh?

So what does this mean?

In short it means that most of what we say to ourselves is not positive self talk but negative self talk.

This is very damaging and unhelpful, in turn restricts what we do or achieve with our lives.

Throughout the day we are talking to ourselves constantly. Some of this is positive self talk – your dreams, your wants, your desires, your family, your friends, the little things that make you smile to yourself.

BUT some of it is negative self talk and this stems from those experiences we were talking of earlier. Those limiting influences that have got you nowhere.

This kind of negative self talk is what holds you back. It restricts you, brings you down and stops you from doing the things in life that you dream about.

This kind of self talk is destructive and needs to be avoided at ALL costs.

You must be aware of everything you are saying to yourself. Whether it be out loud or in your head, when you find you are speaking to yourself in a negative way STOP!

For the majority of us it is so easy to take more notice of the negative than the positive thinking.

How do i improve my positive self talk?

You need to listen out for the positive things you say to yourself and concentrate on these instead.

Think of your mind as a garden. Your positive self talk is the sunlight and water that helps all of the beautiful flowers to grow and flourish. Whilst the negative self talk is the weeds threatening to run rampant and undermine your hard work . Unless weeded out as they start to shoot.

Just like the flowers in your garden, your positive self talk has to be nurtured and encouraged. As you do so the negative self talk will die back because it isn’t getting the sustenance it needs to grow.

Once you allow the the positive self talk to flourish you will find great things start to happen. You will find a difference in the way other people see and treat you. Your whole outlook will change and positive things will start to happen in your life.

It’s not going to be something that will happen over night. After all you are trying to reverse years of subconscious programming. But if you make a conscious effort to change your mindset and you are determined enough to see it through, then you WILL get there in the end.
